Company Profile
Isuzu traces its origins to the year 1916 when Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Company Ltd. partnered with Tokyo Gas and Electric Industrial Company to diversify into automobile production. Subsequently, the joint venture produced Japan’s first passenger car in technical collaboration with Wolseley Motors of England. In the year 1937, the company was formalised as Tokyo Automobile Industries Company Limited. It began focusing on heavy-duty trucks and buses. The company was rebranded as Isuzu Motors Limited in 1949.
In the 1950s, Isuzu launched multiple popular models like the light truck Elf and passenger car Bellel. General Motors acquired 34% stakes in Isuzu in 1972. Isuzu entered the United States in 1981 with models like Trooper and I-Mark.
