It specialises in the design, manufacture and distribution of tyres and related mobility solutions. Michelin offers both original equipment manufacturer and replacement tyres for passenger vehicles and light trucks, tyres for commercial vehicles and heavy trucks and specialty tyres. Company Profile
Michelin was founded on 28th May 1889 by brothers Eduoard and Andre Michelin. The company began as a manufacturer of farm implements, prior to inventing the world’s first removable pneumatic tyre. Thereafter, Michelin introduced pneumatic tyres for automobiles in the year 1895. The company published a free travel guide for motorists, Michelin Guide, in 1900. It introduced restaurant ratings in 1926 and launched the iconic Michelin Stars, awarded to restaurants for culinary excellence, in 1931.
Michelin introduced run-flat tyre, which allowed vehicles to run even after a puncture, in the year 1934. The company patented the radial tyre in 1946, entering the US market in 1951 as a supplier of radial tyres. In the 1990s and 2000s, Michelin expanded to multiple emerging markets in Asia and South America.
Michelin is currently the world’s largest tyre manufacturer by revenues. It operates 67 production plants across 17 countries. Apart from Michelin brand, the company also owns other tyre brands, including BFGoodrich, Uniroyal, Kleber, Taurus and Kormoran. While tyres remain the core of Michelin’s offerings, the company also provides fleet management services and digital maps like ViaMichelin.
