ITEL Mobile was launched in the year 2008 by Transsion Holdings, a Chinese multinational consumer electronics company. It was launched as an ultra- affordable feature phone brand for the African market. ITEL quickly gained traction in Africa, particularly in Nigeria and Kenya. In the year 2011, ITEL became a distinct brand under Transsion Holdings, with a focus on budget feature phones and entry-level smartphones.
ITEL expanded to India, Bangladesh and other South/Southeast Asian countries in the 2013-16 period. By the year 2016, ITEL and other brands under Transsion Holdings had become the top mobile phone suppliers in Africa. In the year 2017, ITEL started offering budget smartphones with features like dual-sim and long battery life. It grew rapidly in India and had become the most popular mobile phone brand under Rs. 7000 in the country by 2023.
