ITC was founded as Imperial Tobacco Company of India Limited by the Imperial Tobacco Company of London in the year 1910. It started operations by sourcing tobacco from Indian farmers and opened its first cigarette factory at Bangalore in the year 1913. The company established India’s first cigarette tissue paper plant in the year 1946.
Imperial Tobacco Company of India Limited was renamed India Tobacco Company Limited in the year 1970, which was shortened to ITC Limited in 1974. The company diversified to paperboards and specialty papers in the late 1970s and agribusiness and non-tobacco FMCGs in the 1990s.
ITC Limited is currently the third-largest tobacco company in the world and the second-largest FMCG company in India. It holds around 80% shares in India’s organised cigarette market. Apart from FMCG, the company has a strong presence in paper, packaging, IT and agribusiness sectors as well.
