Company History
MG was founded as a sales and promotion arm of Morris Garages by Cecil Kimber in the year 1924. Morris Garages Car Company came into existence in 1928 and was officially incorporated in the year 1930. The company launched a number of sports car throughout the 1930s, including M-type Midget, K3 Magnette, T-Series and C-type.
In the year 1935, MG was sold to Morris Motors, a prominent constituent entity of the Morris Group. Morris Garages Car Company was absorbed into British Motor Corporation when Morris Motors and Austin Motor Company merged to form British Motor Corporation in the year 1952. In the year 1968, MG came under the ownership of British Leyland Corporation. Production of MG sports cars ended in 1980. However, MG marquee was used on performance Austins and Rovers.
MG’s ownership passed from BML to BMW to MG Rover Group till Nanjing Automobile Corporation bought MG brand and assets in 2005. Nanjing Automobile Corporation merged with SAIC Motor Corp in 2007. The first Chinese MG, MG 6, was launched in 2006.
Current Status
MG operates in more than 80 countries worldwide and is one of the fastest-growing car brands in the world, particularly in EVs and hybrids. Production is mainly centered in China, India, Thailand and Indonesia. Exports account for around 88% of MG’s sales volumes. India is a major market for the brand.
