Company History

Alcatel was founded in the year 1925 as a subsidiary to manufacture telecommunication equipment by Compagnie Générale d’Électricité (CGE), a French industrial conglomerate. In the period from 1928 to 1970, Alcatel grew strongly to become one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of telephone switches, cables and transmission systems. CGE rebranded to Alcatel-Alsthom in the 1980s.

Alcatel-Alsthom acquired the telecom businesses of ITT Corporation in Europe and US in the year 1986. The group was renamed Alcatel in the year 1991. Alcatel entered data networking and internet infrastructure by acquiring DSC Communications and Packet Engines in the year 1998. In the year 2005, Alcatel licenced its mobile phone brand to TCL Technology for 10 years.

In the year 2006, Alcatel merged with Lucent Technologies to form Alcatel-Lucent, which became one of the largest telecom equipment companies in the world at that time. Alcatel-Lucent was acquired by Nokia in January 2016. Nokia extended the licence to TCL Technology to make and sell Alcatel-branded smartphones and feature phones in the year 2024.

Current Status

Alcatel-Lucent has been fully integrated into Nokia and it doesn’t exist as a separate division any longer. Nokia owns all the telecom infrastructure products of Alcatel-Lucent. These include 5G/6G network, optical transport, IP routing and submarine cables. Nokia continues to leverage Alcatel-Lucent’s AI-driven networks and hybrid solutions.

Alcatel brand of smartphones and tablets is owned by Nokia but licenced to TCL Technology. The brand is mainly focused on budget devices and primarily targets emerging markets like India. Recent launches include Alcatel V3 Series of entry to mid-range smartphones, Alcatel 3 in the entry-level smartphones segment and Alcatel 1 series of tablets and feature phones.

Future Outlook

TCL Technology plans to increase the market share of Alcatel-branded smartphones in the budget 5G segment and also expand in India and Europe by 2026. Alcatel is likely to remain a low-risk brand for TCL in the near future, with no expected push in the premium segment.

Nokia is expected to leverage Alcatel-Lucent’s Bell Lab R&D facility to develop newer innovations in telecom infrastructure.
