American Tourister was founded as American Luggage Works by brothers Sol and Irving Koeffler in Providence, Rhode Island, United States. It started operations by producing low-priced suitcases for the working class segment of the population. The company rapidly expanded within the United States in the later part of 1940s. American Luggage Works was renamed American Tourister in the 1950s.

American Tourister capitalised on the increasing trend of air travel in the 1950s by launching Taper Line, a series of suitcases designed for air travel. In the year 1970, American Tourister introduced world’s first moulded hard-sided luggage, manufactured using injection moulding technique. In the year 1995, the brand was integrated into the Samsonite Corporation. American Tourister expanded to backpacks, soft-sided luggage and travel accessories in the 2000s.

American Tourister holds a strong share in the global affordable luggage segment. Its products are known for multiple innovative features like TSA locks, expandable compartments and vibrant designs. The brand’s products are sold through Samsonite outlets, mass retailers and department stores.
