Company Profile
Micromax Informatics Limited was founded on 29th March 2000 by Rahul Sharma. It started as a software company specialising in embedded systems and fixed wireless terminals. The company entered the mobile phone market with feature phones in the year 2008. By the year 2010, Micromax had become one of the largest manufacturers of feature phones in India.
Micromax expanded to smartphones with the launch of Canvas series in the year 2011. The company introduced India’s first quad-core smartphone, named Canvas HD. By the year 2014, Micromax had become the tenth largest smartphone brand in the world. In the 2015-16 period, Micromax expanded to 4G smartphones under Canvas and Bolt series. The company also launched Windows phones, in collaboration with Microsoft.
Micromax currently operates mainly in the budget smartphone sector and also manufactures and distributes feature phones, LED televisions, laptops and home appliances. The company’s share in the Indian smartphone market is niche, down from over 19% in 2013. Micromax announced a new venture for solar panels in February 2025.
