Onida was launched in the year 1981 by Mirc Electronics Limited, a consumer electronics and home appliances company founded by G.L. Mirchandani. In the year 1982, Onida partnered with JVC, a Japanese electronics company, to launch its first television monitor. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Onida gained prominence in India on the back of its cathode ray tube or CRT televisions.
Onida expanded beyond televisions to washing machines, microwave ovens and air conditioners in the early 2000s. The company also opened a chain of 350 retail stores, collectively called Onida Cool Point.
